Hayashi rice – quick and easy version

About Hayashi rice – quick and easy version

Hayashi rice is a dish of sliced beef and onions cooked in demi-glace sauce or tomato based sauce and served with rice. It is a popular “Yoshoku” dish in Japan (Western dishes arranged in Japanese style). In some areas in Japan, people use pork slices instead of beef, or add mushrooms and other ingredients. It has a taste that everyone likes. In the Netherlands where I live, it is difficult to buy thinly sliced beef and demi-glace sauce. Therefore, I devised a way to make it quick and easy by using ground beef and seasonings at home.

I added cherry tomatoes to add freshness and color. And using ground beef that you can get anywhere, it’s friendly to your wallet as well.   The seasonings are tomato ketchup, tonkatsu sauce, soy sauce, and mustard, giving it a slightly Japanese taste. Just fry the meat and onions, add the cherry tomatoes and the seasonings.  You don’t have to simmer, so it’s very quick and easy. It is popular with my family, and I often make it during busy weeks.

I put a link to an article about Hayashi rice, so please read it if you like.

Recipe Tips

I use ground beef, but if you can get thin sliced beef you can use it also.

If you don’t have tonkatsu sauce, mix Worcestershire sauce with ketchup and sugar instead. Mix Worcestershire sauce and ketchup 1: 1 and add a small amount of sugar to taste. I think you can buy tonkatsu sauce at Asian supermarkets.  If you buy it, you can use it in various ways and it is convenient. Below are links to recipes that use tonkatsu sauce, so please try them if you like.

At my house, we add a little amount of daily products such as Greek yogurt, sour cream to Hayashi rice when we eat.  It’s very delicious so please try it once.

Since you usually eat it with rice, I put a link below to how to cook rice.
